The Battle of Hampton Roads, fought on March 8–9, 1862, during the American Civil War, was the first battle in history between ironclad warships. The Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia (rebuilt from the USS Merrimack) attacked Union wooden ships on the first day, but the newly arrived Union ironclad USS Monitor fought the Virginia to a draw on the second day. Although neither side won a decisive victory, the battle revolutionized naval warfare by proving that armored, steam-powered ironclads had made traditional wooden warships obsolete.
