Whether you are driving, jogging or walking along Monument Avenue, you cannot help but notice the stately beauty and grandeur of this area that has been described as "the South's most beautiful boulevard". The sun highlights some of the wonderful architectural elements on these turn-of-the-century homes on this warm afternoon, inviting the viewer to take a strong "Along the Avenue".
The Jefferson Davis Monument with its thirteen Doric columns can easily be recognized in the background. This monument was erected at the intersection of Davis and Monument and unveiled to the public on June 3, 1907.
The monument was toppled in June 2020 by protesters because it was a prominent Confederate symbol that many saw as glorifying slavery and racial oppression during nationwide anti-racism demonstrations.
