In the mid-1600's English colonists chose the falls of the James River for settlement due to its natural advantages for trade and transportation.
Goods from the colony's highland interior could be shipped downstream to the falls, and sailing vessels from exotic ports around the world could reach it as well. The city of Richmond sprang forth on the river's shore and flourished.
