Old Norfolk Evening represents the Market Square of historic Norfolk, Virginia about 1887 when patrons and farmers gathered in and around the Market Building to buy and sell dry goods, produce, and livestock.

This street that "leadeth to the waterside" is lined with ships chandleries, sail lofts, restaurants and saloons catering to residents as well as sailors from far away ports.

The full-rigged English ship Carnarvonshire, built in 1876, is being towed into the harbor to take on goods for her voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. Double ended steam ferries shuttle back and forth across the Elizabeth River to Berkley and Portsmouth and the side-wheel steamer Luray, built in 1882, is carrying her passengers downstream toward Town Point.
