BELLE J. NEAL, CLIPPER FISHING SCHOONER, 1880
19" by 30" Oil Painting by artist Richard Loud
The Belle J. Neal of Gloucester 1880 was a clipper fishing schooner. Popular in many fisheries from 1860s to the 1880s. Often very heavily canvassed, they were extremely fast. Capable of remarkable achievements when properly managed, and none which is more liable to disaster when mishandled.
