"THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE"
NORTH ELEUTHERA ISLAND, BAHAMAS
By Howard Schafer
1938 - 2004

Howard Schafer is the most widely-collected artist in oil ever to display his work at the Annapolis Marine Art Gallery. His paintings capture everyday moments on the sea with sunlit clarity and affection. His profound depth of feeling speaks from the canvas with the quiet force of familiarity. He had an appreciation and love for the Bahamas and its working population, which placed him in the top tier of artists depicting the area. Howard also painted Chesapeake subjects and rural maritime scenes of England.

We don't often have consigned Schafers - this is a rare exception. This is a 24" x 40" view of the native fishing sloop WAVE out of Nassau, Bahamas. It is a pleasant afternoon, running before the breeze, headed around the high coral atoll called "Devil's Backbone." The vessel's destination, North Eleuthera Island, is lit vividly in the distance through a passing hole in the clouds. The drama of the clouds and the play of light on the tropical blue water is as compelling as any Howard Schafer painting we've ever had in the gallery. To see Howard Schafer's depiction of light in other scenes, see Howard Schafer - Journey of a Marine Artist, by Bion Bierer
