Nationally known maritime artist John
Barber, FASMA, has for many years
dedicated his work to documenting the endangered and vanishing aspects of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic coast. Mr. Barber received a fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to pursue his education at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1969. During that time, he became attuned to the plight of the Chesapeake Bay and has devoted much of his career to painting the sublime beauty of this most valuable and threatened estuary. Each year, Mr. Barber spends considerable time in the field, observing and becoming a part of his subject. He spends many days actually working on the decks of skipjacks, buy-boats and crab skiffs in order to develop a more intimate knowledge of the subjects which he brings to life with pencil and brush.
Mr. Barber is a Charter and Fellow Member of
the American Society of Marine Artists, a non-profit organization dedicated to the recognition and support of fine marine art and history in the United States. Through donations of his artwork and copyrights, nearly a half-million dollars has been raised to support the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, The Nature Conservancy and other non-profit conservation groups.
His efforts were recognized in 1984 when he received the Chesapeake Appreciation Days Award. The Izaak Walton League also honored the artist by presenting him with the 1985 Chesapeake Bay Conservation Award. In 1986, he had the honor of presenting one of his paintings, "Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks" to President Reagan.
Long one of the most successful self-published artists in America, in 2004 Mr. Barber retired from his
retail and wholesale print businesses. The Annapolis Marine Art Gallery acquired the business and established John Barber
Editions, which will carry on the Barber print legacy through the sale of the existing print inventory and the publishing of new limited-edition prints.
Through his art, Mr. Barber hopes to capture the beauty of this region's fast-disappearing maritime treasure, in order to record these special moments for his children and for generations to come.
The artist still paints full time from his Richmond studio and is the primary source for his original art.

Statement from John Barber on "Offloading the Catch"
In 1980 I sailed on my first skipjack in order to see first hand how these graceful old vessels caught oysters on the Chesapeake Bay. My first day of oystering was aboard Elsworth, built in 1901 with Captain Darryl Larrimore. At that time there were about three dozen of these boats dredging for oysters in the Maryland waters of the bay. Today only a few remain.
In the print we see Elsworth (Dredge #22) tied up at Harrison Oyster House at Knapp’s Narrows on Tilghman Island, Maryland. She has caught a load of oysters on the nearby Choptank River and now her crew is unloading the day’s catch. Other workboats fill the harbor.
I felt compelled to create this painting to record those early days, over 30 years ago, when I frequented the island, sailed on many of the skipjacks and painted these floating icons of Chesapeake life, hard at work. This is a major painting based on “Offloading the Catch,” a study of the same scene which sold in the spring of 2011.

REACHING FOR THE FINISH
Hampton Sloops Racing on the Lower Chesapeake 14" X 28"
Salt spray in the air, the calls of wheeling gulls and the shouts of helmsman to crew! These are the sights and sounds of racing sail. Here we see a fleet of Hampton One Designs in tight competition- on a close reach to the finish line. To the right we see boats which are running toward the leeward mark or buoy just aft the leading boat’s boom. The Hamptons were first built in 1934 and continue to be a popular class of racing sloops on the Chesapeake Bay.
